I found the time to develop an interest and passion for swimming – even in the cold weather! Furthermore, I had the peace of mind that I would be alright financially thanks to the support provided by my scholarship. Nevertheless, the community at Sussex, at IDS and in Brighton ensured that we all stayed positive, felt supported and continued to develop our intellectual pursuits. Lockdowns forced our cohort to remain physically separated, only being able to maintain contact through online sessions and meetings. The Covid-19 pandemic meant that most of my classes transitioned into remote learning. My year in Brighton and at Sussex was a rich but challenging experience. When I began classes, I immediately met some brilliant peers who were just as enthusiastic about improving food systems as I was. The University buildings bristled with the excitement of students eager to start the new academic year. It was whilst I was there that I made the decision to study for a Masters degree. After travelling to Kenya and Australia, studying and working my way round, I worked as a project lead and nutrition educator for the University of Maryland’s SNAP Ed program. Whilst there, I became interested in food systems, malnutrition and food security, ultimately deciding that I wanted to study anthropology, health, and nutrition. When I was seventeen years old I spent seven months volunteering in rural Malawi. Thanks to a Friends of the University of Sussex Scholarship she was able to leave her native USA and come to Sussex. “Looking back on my Sussex experience, I am ever grateful for the opportunity that the Friends of the University of Sussex Scholarship offered me.”Ī seven-month trip to Malawi had a profound influence on Emily Vooris (Food and Development, 2021), leading to her decision to study for a Masters.
